Does Blockbuster suck worse than Business Method patents?

Netflix sues Blockbuster to shut online service - U.S. Business - MSNBC.com

Yet another great busienss-method patent fight. Ugh.

Well, I can't stand blockbuster, who, among other transgressions, got busted in a lawsuit for claiming in marketing, "No More Late Fees" but had a fee listed in the fine print for keeping videos longer than a week. But I can't stand business method patents wielded as swords no matter who does it.

I couldn't believe that Blockbuster had the cajones to advertise that it didn't have late fees 'like those other guys". Just hypocritical since they were one of the biggest offenders of charging late fees (and misleading customers about their fee policy, which resulted in them being sued over that too)

Another study showing real danger of cell phone use while driving

I no longer work for a large US cellular company, so I am free to write about this topic. Even better, I can write about how the lobbying by the cellular phone industry has been what keeps laws from being enacted to protect the public. Now, I do agree with the position that there are a lot of things drivers do that are just as bad, if not worse (reading the newspaper on your steering wheel, reading email on a blackberry...) so why pick on cellphones, but the fact is that from a public threat perspective, there are way more people doing stupid shit while on their cellphone than all other distracted driving combined, I guarantee.

I have made it a habit to note how many drivers doing stupid shit are talking on their cellphones when I see them and it is, no joke, almost 100% of drivers. I challenge you to do the same and you'll be horrified at how many common dangerous and annoying things are related to being on a cell phone at the time:

  • Driving too slow
  • Unable to stay in lane
  • Swerving
  • Not letting you merge (not paying attention)
  • Etc. etc.

CNN.com - Study: Drivers on cells more likely to crash - Jul 12, 2005

A study released Tuesday said drivers who use cell phones -- even hands-free models -- are four times as likely to be involved in wrecks involving a serious injury than are drivers who do not use cell phones.

Appropriate, yet unfortunate, commentary on the times we live in

Daily Howler: Coulter makes ''errors'' like other scribes breathe. But store-bought John Cloud couldn't find them

ERNSTEIN WATCHES THINGS FALL APART: Congratulations to Carl Bernstein, perhaps our frankest press bigfoot. On last evening’s Special Report, Jim Angle cited a recent speech by the Watergate worthy:

ANGLE (4/19/05): Former Washington Post reporter Carl Bernstein, who helped break the Watergate story, says journalism nowadays is squandering the public's trust, insisting the, quote, "triumph of the idiot culture in news, particularly TV news, has weakened journalist drive for the truth."

At a press convention in Kansas, Bernstein said, quote, "The consequences to a society that is misinformed and disinformed by the grotesque values of this idiot culture are truly perilous. For the first time in our history," he went on, "the weird, the stupid, the coarse, the sensational and the untrue are becoming our cultural norm, even our cultural ideal."
